Indiana youth affected by homelessness.

As of January 2018, Indiana had an estimated 5,258 individuals experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that total, 481 were families, 539 were veterans, 268 were unaccompanied young adults (age 180-24), and 449 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2016-2017 school year showed an estimated 17,863 public school students experienced homelessness throughout the year. Of that total, 249 were students unsheltered, 2,476 were in shelters, 1,266 were in hotels/motels, and 13,872 were “couch hopping” (living in homes of family, friends, etc.).
